UI Lineworkers Advance Technical Skills and Industry Knowledge at Underground Splicing Training Event
Hands-on training, certifications, and exposure to emerging technologies support continued workforce development while promoting electric system safety and reliability
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah— April 9, 2025 — United Illuminating (UI), a subsidiary of Avangrid, recently participated in the Elektrik 133 Day Underground Splicer event in Salt Lake City, Utah, reinforcing the company’s commitment to workforce development among front-line workers in order to promote best-in-class electric system reliability for customers. The two-day event provided UI underground lineworkers with hands-on technical training in advanced splicing techniques and equipment. Designed to enhance field performance and safety, the training focused on improving efficiency in underground electric utility construction and maintenance.
“We are proud of our underground lineworkers for expanding their expertise in a rapidly evolving industry,” said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of UI. “As demand for electricity and underground infrastructure grows, it’s essential that we continue investing in a well-trained, well-equipped frontline workforce. Supporting technical skill development ensures we can deliver safe, reliable service to the communities we serve. We look forward to continuing these efforts to strengthen our workforce and advance the resiliency of our electric infrastructure.”
Held in early March, the Elektrik 133 Day event brought together lineworkers from across the country for training sessions and competitive demonstrations. Participants were evaluated on craftsmanship, safety, efficiency, and performance while completing various underground splicing tasks. UI’s team gained valuable insights into improved preparation, connection, protection, and testing methods—enhancing their operational capabilities in the field.
“The event was an important opportunity to build on our team’s technical skills and stay current with the latest tools and safety standards,” said Christine Pariseau, Senior Manager of Regional Operations at UI. “Learning alongside other industry professionals helps us identify new approaches and refine daily operations to better serve our customers.”
In addition to the hands-on training, UI employees earned Pfisterer’s Medium Voltage 0–3 Connex Certification, a specialized credential in advanced underground splicing techniques. They also engaged with manufacturers including Southwire, TE Connectivity, and Nexans, gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies designed to improve safety, reliability, and efficiency in underground systems.
“As demand for skilled underground splicers continues to grow, ongoing training and certification are more important than ever,” said Jay Fainer, Lead Supervisor of Electric Operations at UI. “We’re proud of our team’s commitment to excellence and look forward to continued opportunities that strengthen our workforce and prepare the next generation of electric utility professionals.”
