UI Prepared to Respond to Remnants of Tropical Storm Debby

Electric Operations team, line crews, and vegetation management crews ready to mobilize to respond to and restore customer outages Friday afternoon into the overnight hours

ORANGE, Conn. — August 9, 2024 — As the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby are expected to lead to hazardous conditions Friday afternoon into the overnight hours, United Illuminating (UI), a subsidiary of Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), today issued the following statement:


“Restoring power during customer outages is UI’s number-one priority on both blue-sky days and during storm events. As we prepare for potentially hazardous conditions across our service area this afternoon and into the overnight hours, UI is fully prepared for impacts to our electric system, with our Incident Management Team and Electric Operations resources staffed to restore any customers who lose power as quickly and safely as we can. We encourage our customers to use our Storm Checklist to ensure they are prepared for an outage of any duration, including charging the battery of their cell phone and having candles and flashlights on hand. Customers can also visit our website to report outages at any time and sign up for Outage Alerts to receive up-to-date information on Estimated Restoration Times. Throughout today and into the early hours of tomorrow, you may see us working in rainy and windy conditions to clear downed trees and branches or make repairs to our infrastructure, so please drive carefully as we work to restore power to all the communities we serve.” Sarah Wall Fliotsos, UI spokesperson

  • As of 4 PM on Friday, August 9, UI’s Incident Management Team and Electric Operations resources will be staffed to respond to the predicted customer outages, with the ability to scale all line, substation and logistics workers and vegetation management resources for the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby to meet our Estimated Restoration Times.
  • In the UI service area, the company expects one to two inches of rain Thursday night into early Saturday, with peak wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph Friday night.
