UI, SCG, and CNG Award $450,000 in Tax Credits to More than 70 Local Community Organizations

Tax credit funds through the Neighborhood Assistance Act have supported energy efficiency upgrades for Connecticut nonprofits with over $4.5 million since 2010

ORANGE, Conn. — December 18, 2023 — United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), and Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) – subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR) – today announced the award of $450,000 in funding through Connecticut’s Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program. With the assistance, more than 70 community organizations and local nonprofits served by UI, SCG, or CNG will be able to make important energy efficiency upgrades that improve the value of their energy and reduce their carbon footprint. The program is administered by the State of Connecticut through the Department of Revenue Services (DRS), and since 2010, UI, SCG, and CNG have provided community organizations with over $4.5 million through the tax credit program. Images from today's events can be accessed and downloaded HERE.

“Setting up our local nonprofits for success is one of the best ways we can support our entire community, because these 74 organizations are doing the essential work on the ground to help the people we serve,” said Frank Reynolds, President & CEO of UI, SCG, and CNG. “We are pleased to support these critical energy efficiency upgrades for their facilities as we work together to improve sustainability and energy affordability for the customers we serve.”

UI, SCG, and CNG each provided $150,000 in funding to organizations in their service area through the NAA program, supporting energy efficiency upgrades such as window, boiler, or chiller replacements for education centers and temporary housing facilities; lighting upgrades for nonprofit theatre companies, churches, and community colleges; and weatherization projects at historic houses and food pantries.

UI’s contribution supports 18 organizations, including the Connecticut Zoological Society, which received a $30,000 in tax credits for a new exterior and framing for a greenhouse at Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport. Beardsley Zoo is the only zoo in Connecticut, and UI has supported many of their programs in the zoo’s 101-year history.

SCG is supporting 26 organizations, including the Sterling House Community Center in Stratford, which received $10,000 to improve the energy efficiency of their exterior walls and windows as well their HVAC system. Employees from SCG, as well as UI and parent company Avangrid, have also donated over 60 hours of volunteer time to Sterling House.

With its contribution, CNG is supporting 30 organizations, including with $10,000 in funds to Operation Fuel to support their Hartford-based Better Homes and Buildings Program. CNG and its sister companies have supported Operation Fuel for over two decades, including with a $3.3 million donation in early 2023 to support customers during the energy supply rate increase.

“The assistance provided by United Illuminating through Connecticut’s Neighborhood Assistance Program is integral to our plans to renovate and update our greenhouse,” said Gregg Dancho, Director of Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo. “It is only with the generous support of organizations like United Illuminating that the Zoo can reach its goals. The greenhouse, demonstrating the connection between people, plants, and animals, is an important part of our conservation and education mission.”
