UI, SCG Announce $15,000 Grant to Support Affordable Housing in Bridgeport

Funding Builds on nearly $120,000 Awarded to Support Shelters, Affordable Housing Complexes Since 2022

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Wednesday, June 7, 2023 — United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas, subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), today announced the award of a $15,000 grant to Connecticut Housing Partners, a Bridgeport-based affordable housing organization. The funding builds on the companies’ ongoing commitment to support affordable housing throughout their service territories, and will allow Connecticut Housing Partners to maintain and expand their programs despite current economic pressures.  Since 2022, UI and SCG have donated nearly $120,000 to affordable housing organizations across the Bridgeport, New Haven, and Hartford regions.

“Building strong communities starts with helping the most vulnerable, and that is why we at UI and SCG are proud to support Connecticut Housing Partners as they work to reverse homelessness and promote affordable housing throughout Bridgeport and Fairfield County,” said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of UI and SCG. “With above-average heat forecasted for this summer, and the increasing likelihood of severe storms driven by climate change, it is critical that Connecticut Housing Partners have access to the resources they need to help more people transition out of homelessness into stable, affordable housing.”

The grant funding will allow Connecticut Housing Partners to relieve the burden on its budget due to inflationary and economic pressures, which have increased its own costs while driving greater need for its services throughout Fairfield County. The organization operates 12 homeless shelters and dozens of Below Market Rate apartments to promote affordable housing across Fairfield County. With this support, Connecticut Housing Partners can focus on providing additional services and resources to more than 1,000 low- to moderate-income residents across the region.

"There is a housing crisis in Connecticut, with a shortage of more than 86,000 units of safe and stable affordable housing, for working families. We are grateful when corporate citizens see that investing in housing for struggling households, is good for the community, good for business, and good for the local economy,” said Renée Dobos, Chief Executive Officer, Connecticut Housing Partners. “We have been creating affordable housing opportunities for low and moderate-income families for more than 30 years. Living in a stable home provides a platform for improved outcomes around employment, health, education, and overall well-being. Affordable housing prevents homelessness. Investing in housing right now shows that UI has a real understanding of the crisis we are facing, and real leadership in corporate giving. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with UI.”

“I would like to thank United Illuminating Company for providing a $15,000 grant to Connecticut Housing Partners,” said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim. “This grant will make a huge difference in the lives of Bridgeport residents as they strive to manage the recent increase in electricity rates. My hope is that this will assist as many households as possible in our City through the help of Connecticut Housing Partners.”

For more than 30 years, Connecticut Housing Partners, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has provided shelter and affordable housing solutions to residents of the greater Bridgeport region and Fairfield County. The organization specializes in developing affordable rental housing that serves low- and moderate-income households, seniors, and people with special needs. In addition to housing services, Connecticut Housing Partners also provides real estate development, property management, asset management, and other services.
