ORANGE, Conn. — October 24, 2024 — In an effort to strengthen community partnerships and raise public awareness of utility sector operations, Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), and United Illuminating (UI), subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), last week hosted their inaugural business and operations exhibition. The companies welcomed over 100 attendees from 50 organizations, providing opportunities to connect with more than 15 department representatives. Attendees learned about various projects, equipment, and innovations through comprehensive business presentations and interactive technical demonstrations.
“We were pleased to welcome many of our local business partners and municipal leaders to our headquarters to experience firsthand the diverse operations within our electric and gas departments,” said Frank Reynolds, President & CEO of UI, SCG, and CNG. “Our work extends beyond managing poles, wires, and pipelines. This expo provided an opportunity to highlight essential departments like Energy Efficiency, Project Outreach, and Community Giving, which often go unrecognized but play a vital role in supporting our mission. These departments offer numerous programs for local businesses and the community. We look forward to continuing to showcase our diverse operations and fostering stronger collaborations to discover new ways to support our community.”
Held at the companies’ headquarters in Orange, CT, the event featured fifteen exhibitors from departments such as Safety, Emergency Management, Natural Gas, Customer Service, Community Giving, Project Outreach, Energy Efficiency, Innovations, Sustainability, and Line Crew. Attendees were invited to visit each table to ask questions, network, and explore future collaboration opportunities. Representatives also provided brochures, one-page explainers, visual slideshows, and interactive demonstrations, offering insights into current trends, emerging technologies, and industry discussions.
“It was rewarding to see our local community partners and business leaders engage directly with various business departments they might not interact with daily,” said Ted Novicki, Director of Regulatory Affairs for UI, SCG, and CNG. “Many departments, beyond our electric and gas operations, are working to improve safety protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of our employees and frontline workforce. We are also implementing artificial intelligence to enhance our ability to inspect our electrical infrastructure for damage. Our diverse lines of business are dedicated to supporting the community, and it’s crucial for our community to be aware of these initiatives and projects to better understand our operations and how we strive to provide safe, reliable service.”
The Utility Expo is one of several community outreach initiatives hosted by the companies this year. UI’s Key Account Managers (KAM) and Regulatory Affairs teams have welcomed over 15 municipalities, executive business leaders, and community organizations to UI’s headquarters. These visits provided a comprehensive overview of electric and gas operations, including a walkthrough of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to review the procedures followed during widespread outages and how the central command center collects and analyzes data to initiate power restoration. Attendees also toured UI’s supply yard to view the line trucks, equipment, and tools used by frontline workers. This firsthand experience highlighted the need for investment in equipment to ensure proper maintenance and functionality, thereby ensuring worker safety.
The companies will continue to host tours for state legislators, municipalities, and community organizations throughout the year to enhance communication and collaboration, ultimately improving service to customers and the community.
