UI, SCG President Meets with Community Leaders at 333 Valley Street Center in New Haven

Company Provided $10,000 in Support of Multigenerational Life Skill Programs


NEW HAVEN, Conn. — July 6, 2023 — Frank Reynolds, President & CEO of United Illuminating and Southern Connecticut Gas, subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), visited the 333 Valley Street – An Intergenerational Organization, Inc. (“The Shack”) community center in New Haven last week. The visit, which followed a $10,000 grant to 333 Valley Street earlier this year, included a tour of the center and a meet-and-greet with community members served by the center’s multigenerational programming for the West Hills and West Rock neighborhoods.

“Organizations like 333 Valley Street are the bedrock of our communities, and I was pleased to see first-hand the positive impact this community center is having in New Haven,” said Frank Reynolds, President & CEO of UI and SCG. “Our partnership with 333 Valley Street helps to strengthen the communities we serve, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with the organization’s leadership to bring new and innovative programs to this important community center.”

The visit to 333 Valley Street demonstrates UI and SCG’s continuing commitment to supporting community programs in under-resourced neighborhoods in Connecticut’s urban centers. Last year, UI and SCG presented 333 Valley Street with $3,000 in grant support, which supported cooking classes for young people, computer skills courses for seniors, and a neighborhood food pantry, among other initiatives.

“333 Valley Street – An Intergenerational Organization is so grateful for the grant from UI,” said Honda Smith (D-30), New Haven Alder for West Hills and West Rock and lead volunteer at The Shack. “This grant will benefit youth, seniors and our community in so many ways, and we are so thankful to the amazing people who believed in us.”

“This is an impactful project that will offer people in the West Hills neighborhood a safe place to go and enjoy themselves, connect with other community members, and learn more about local available resources,” said Jeffrey Moreno, Project Manager with the City of New Haven’s Livable City Initiative. “The Shack is the place to be!”

333 Valley Street – An Intergenerational Organization, Inc. (“The Shack”) reopened in 2022 after more than 20 years. Its reopening was due in large part to the volunteer efforts and advocacy of Alder Smith. The center now offers day and evening programs for all ages, including exercise classes, music theory, GED tutoring, and more.
