United Illuminating, Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas Award $441,540 in Grants To Help CT Nonprofits Cut Energy Costs

ORANGE, Conn. — Dec. 23, 2020 — United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG) and Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) today announced the distribution of $441,540 in grants aimed at helping community and neighborhood organizations statewide improve energy efficiency and reduce their energy costs.

The three Connecticut subsidiaries of AVANGRID, Inc. (NYSE: AGR) awarded grants to 59 nonprofit organizations in 26 different communities throughout Connecticut. The grants, ranging from about $2,640 to $12,821, were provided under the state’s Neighborhood Assistance Act tax credit program.

“As we prepare to celebrate the holidays, we are mindful of the many people in our communities who are suffering as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic – and of the important roles nonprofit organizations play in supporting them,” said Frank Reynolds, President of UI, SCG and CNG. “This program allows us to help our nonprofit partners achieve ongoing energy savings, allowing our partners to focus their resources on the critical programs and services that they provide, while providing environmental benefits.”

Connecticut’s Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program offers a corporate tax credit to encourage businesses to provide financial support to qualified local nonprofit organizations. Since 2010, UI, SCG and CNG have awarded $3.8 million in grants through the program.

The 2020 NAA grants announced today support a wide variety of projects undertaken by community organizations across the UI, SCG and CNG service territories. The projects funded for 2020 included:

  • $12,500 to Marrakech, Inc. for mechanical upgrades to a group home it operates in New Haven for people with disabilities and similar service needs.
  • $12,000 to the West Haven Child Development Center to pay for energy efficient lighting and a new air conditioner for a preschool program.
  • $7,690 to Connecticut Landmarks to provide efficient window upgrades at the Isham-Terry House, a historic landmark and museum in Hartford.
  • $9,000 to the Ivoryton Playhouse Theater for HVAC upgrades.
  • $4,886 to the Connecticut Audubon Society of Fairfield to undertake energy efficiency updates, including sealing, weather-proofing and repairing doors at its facilities.
  • $4,470 to Exchange Club Center for KIDSAFE CT, to replace 19 air conditioners with more efficient models in a building used for client programs.
